Biography

Rie Kimura is a baroque violinist from Japan. Her solo violin playing has been praised for it’s “strong personality imbued with expression and rhetoric,” (The Strad) while her outstanding skills as a chamber musician mean that she is a violinist very much in demand. Alongside Ensemble Fantasticus, of which she is a founder member, Rie plays regularly with the Amsterdam Baroque OrchestraBach Collegium Japan, and PRJCT Amsterdam. Her first solo recording, “Tartini & Veracini” (2015) received 5-stars from Dutch national newspaper, De Volkskrant.

Rie studied baroque violin with Lucy van Dael at the Amsterdam Conservatory where she graduated “cum laude”. She has won numerous prizes throughout her career including solo prizes at the Premio Bonporti (Italy) and Yamanashi Early Music Competition (Japan), and ensemble prizes at the Bruges and Van Wassenaer Early Music Competitions.

Ensembles

Ensemble Fantasticus

Ensemble Fantasticus is the brilliant ensemble I founded 15 years ago together with Robert Smith (viola da gamba). We play all sorts of chamber music featuring violin and viola da gamba from 1600 – 1800, but the stylus fantasticus from the end of the 17th century is our speciality! We have made several critically acclaimed recordings over the years, some of which you can find below. To find our more about Ensemble Fantasticus, please visit our website: www.fantasticus.art

Duo Belder Kimura

I have a duo partnership together with the renowned keyboard player, Pieter-Jan Belder. We explore the great and vast repertoire for violin and keyboard of the 18th and early 19th century. Our performances focus on the rhetorical qualities of the music from this era – equally important in 17th century music as in the later music by Mozart and Beethoven. Website of Duo Belder Kimura
